cartridge (release 1.0 to release 3.0) contains expanded RAM and

The two-piece cartridge
consists of NVRAM and software flash card (release 4.0 or higher)
NVRAM contains expanded RAM and system software on a PCMCIA flash
card. The NVRAM has 2 releases (release 1&2) it’s very important to
only use release 2 NVRAM if you upgrading a system to any release
higher than release 6.0.

Customer data (RAM) is stored
on the ICS and is preserved during software upgrades and
power outages.
